Bundesbank: German growth to ‘temporarily’ slow
German economic growth will probably weaken on waning export demand after a “further robust expansion” in the current quarter, the Bundesbank said. “The pace of the German economy should temporarily slow after a very buoyant recovery over the first three quarters of 2010,” the Frankfurt-based central bank said in its quarterly report published today. Growth may weaken to 2pc in 2011 and 1.5pc in 2012 from 3.6pc this year, it said. The German economy, Europe’s largest, has powered the euro region’s expansion this year as companies stepped up output and hiring to meet global export demand. The Bundesbank led by Axel Weber said it expects reviving global export demand to help translate into stronger consumer spending after a “more moderate” growth over the winter months. Business Independent

A €17m fund is being launched to encourage new firms to create jobs.Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation Batt O’Keeffe says the fund will support early stage entrepreneurs in driving export-led growth and creating new high-quality jobs. The move follows the Taoiseach’s announcement in July of Innovation Fund Ireland – a €500m fund aimed at drawing top venture capitalists to Ireland. The Sunday Business Post

105 Jobs for Galway via Hewlett Packard
US computer giant Hewlett Packard has announced that it is to create 105 new jobs in Co Galway. The highly-skilled positions will be based within the global IT organisation in Ballybrit which supports the company’s enterprise business unit. “This is an important part of helping develop HP’s capability in software engineering, and we see it as an important statement of both our capacity to do more and the relevance of the skills that have been developed by the existing team here in Galway,” said Gerry Jacob, vice president within HP’s EB IT organisation. Irish Independent

Over 100 jobs created by Superquinn and Centra
Some 70 positions have been added at Superquinn’s new 13,000sq ft supermarket in Rathgar, which opened this weekend, while the opening of a 6,000sq ft Centra store at the Regency Hotel on the Swords Road has resulted in the initial creation of 40 jobs. The Rathgar outlet is the second Superquinn store to open in recent months following the opening of a store at Dublin’s Heuston Station and takes its chain to 25 stores. The company, which is chaired by Simon Burke and owned by the consortium Select Retail Holdings, recently appointed former Dunnes Stores director Andrew Street as chief executive. Mr Street took up his role at the start of the month. Regency Centra, part of the McGettigan group, said it had invested €850,000 in its Swords Road store. The company added that the number of retail positions on the site would eventually increase to 70. More than 470 convenience stores operate under the Centra name across Ireland. Irish Times

EU ‘considering’ rescue fund overhaul
European officials are considering plans to overhaul the euro zone’s €440 billion rescue fund and use it to buy bonds of distressed governments, it was claimed today. The Financial Times said the measures would make it easier to aid debt-laden countries without resorting to fully-fledged bail-outs, citing people involved with the deliberations. Only the European Central Bank has so far purchased bonds of embattled peripheral countries such as Ireland and Portugal to lower their borrowing costs, a move that proved controversial even within the bank itself. The European financial stability facility, which is set to be replaced by a permanent fund in 2013, could also be modified to provide short-term credit lines to countries struggling to borrow on the market but not in need of a multi-year bail-out package, the FT said. Business Times
On the Continent:

What Europe Should Do about the Euro Crisis
Euro-zone members will have to take radical measures to tackle its current currency crisis. Europe needs a far-reaching debt restructuring mechanism — but strangely, politicians have shown a preference for issuing yet more mountains of debt. The euro has never been popular with Germans. But now that they might have to atone for the financial sins of other EU countries, the number of euroskeptics has been swelling dramatically. German Chancellor Angela Merkel would warmly welcome a chance to provide a bit of relief on the domestic front. The way to do so is through something the experts call “creditor liability.” In layman’s terms, it means that the scoundrels from the banks that lent all the money to the severely cash-strapped EU member states should bear some of the pain resulting from any defaults.Die Speigel

Call for 5,000 census workers
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has issued a call for 5,000 people to work as enumerators for the 2011 census. Successful applicants for the positions will be handed a short-term contract and are expected to deliver census forms to some 400 homes in their area, collect them on completion and compile a population report on their assigned area. “The enumerator must carry out a visual survey of their area and verify the location of all the dwellings listed in their record book; they must also locate and mark on the map any dwellings not already listed,” the CSO said. Business Times

Genband [new HQ] to create 100 jobs in Galway
Genband, the US telecommunications company, has announced it will create 100 jobs in its new international headquarters in Galway. The company develops IP infrastructure and jobs will be in finance, supply chain management, customer support, software development, HR, legal and administrative activities. Genband plans to establish its international HQ and business services centre in Galway, representing an €8m investment. Career Zoo

Massive plans to employ over 4000 jobs via GPCE in Kerry
300 people could begin work at GPCE’s offices at Centrepoint in the town as early as January.
A grassroots campaign involving key business people in Kerry has been launched to support and lobby for the development of the planned €4.7bn pharmaceutical centre of excellence for Tralee. An estimated 300 people attended a public meeting on Tuesday on the proposed international centre, which developers claim will create over 4,000 jobs in Tralee. Following the meeting, a number of prominent business leaders have come together to organise a campaign of public support and awareness for the proposed development. Funded entirely by businesses in the county, the new campaign has set up a website to lobby for the pharmaceutical centre and will erect of a number of strategically located roadsigns around Kerry which declare ‘Kerry 4 GPCE’. Kerry People

28% of UK firms to recruit next year
Nearly a third of UK firms plan to recruit more staff in the coming year – twice as many as planned to expand their workforce in 2009, a survey suggests. Around 28% of companies said they would increase their headcount during the coming 12 months, with 15% planning significant increases, according to the statistics released today by accountancy firm PwC. The group said the picture was similar across the US and much of Europe, as companies looked to recruit again. Breaking News

Schaeuble rejects euro breakup, touts Germany as European model
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said the euro area won’t break up and cited his government’s deficit-cutting path as a model for the rest of Europe. “When countries have problems, many people look for the culprits outside their borders,” Schaeuble was cited as saying in an interview published today in Bild newspaper. “Of course teachers’ pets are never terribly popular, especially if they say, ‘Do it our way.’ But there’s no way around it — nobody was forced to join the currency union.” German economic policy, coupled with fiscal austerity, yields “good growth with social stability,” Schaeuble said, as the 16 euro countries seek ways to stop Europe’s debt crisis and end speculation the currency area will split. Business Independent

BWG Foodservice, part of BWG Foods, has secured a €2.5 million contract with the Hospital Procurement Services Group (HPSG). Under the terms of the two-year deal, BWG will supply food and non-food products to the catering departments of 16 hospitals. John Moane, managing director of BWG’s wholesale division, which includes BWG Foodservice, said the company had secured the hospitals’ contract on the back of its key geographic locations and recent investment in new systems. The Sunday Business Post

Renewable energy firm Gaelectric has secured planning approval for a 15 megawatt (MW) wind farm at Inishative, near Pomeroy, Co Tyrone. The stg£22million (€26million) scheme will have six wind turbines, with capacity to power some 8,000 homes annually. Gaelectric secured planning permission for a 15 megawatt wind farm in Carn Hill, Co Antrim, and a 12.5 megawatt development in Cregganconroe, Co Tyrone, earlier this year. Gaelectric chief executive Brendan McGrath said the company had, so far, secured €50 million in equity investment, and would start to generate revenue in 2011. The Sunday Business Post

€1m IT deal ‘great start for Unity business’
Unity Technology Solutions, the company that emerged from the Calyx receivership in September, has done a €1 million deal with the oil and gas exploration group, Petroceltic. The exploration group has hired Unity to provide outsourced information technology services for its headquarters in Dublin and its offices in Europe and North Africa. The deal is understood to be worth over €1 million to Unity, and is one of the first major new contracts won by the company since it took over the Calyx business in the autumn. Business Times

Irish solution to what was not an Irish problem
Instead of ignoring warnings and acting behind closed doors, the government should have moved sooner during the financial crisis and engaged with our European partners. It would have saved the taxpayer billions, writes Mike Flynn. There were many warning signs in the 12 months prior to the bank guarantee that should have led to an investigation of the banks, and Anglo-Irish Bank in particular. The statement that there was no alternative to a bank guarantee on 29 September 2008 may be true, but only because the longer the delay before acting, the fewer options there are. Business Tribune

Bagel Bar, the Irish food company founded in 2001 by former banker and IT executive Ray Cowzer, is hoping that a push into the Middle East will help revive fortunes at the company as it weathers the economic storm at home. Mr Cowzer was recently approached by Sary Hamway, a respected Dubai-based franchising expert, with a view to marketing the Bagel Bar concept to investors in the region. Business Independent

Skype’s co-founder says Silicon Valley is yesterday
Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström says Silicon Valley is no longer the centre of the tech universe and good start-ups can come from anywhere, including Ireland, John Kennedy reports … Zennström and Friis sold Skype to eBay in 2005 for $2.6bn. In 2009, Zennström was part of the consortium that bought Skype from eBay and he currently sits on the board of the internet telephone company. Zennström and Friis now run their own venture capital firm Atomico, which has a fund of $165m and has invested in 30 companies such as Last.fm and Xobni. Zennström chuckles as I gush about the marvel of Skype and how it keeps my world-strewn family in touch. He reminds me that therein lies one of the best lessons at discovering a technology success. Business Independent

Merkel’s Reputation on the Decline in Europe
German chancellor Angela Merkel, say many, has made Ireland’s debt crisis worse.
Everyone is talking about German Chancellor Angela Merkel these days — and most of what they have to say isn’t complimentary. Her plan to create a bankruptcy mechanism for euro-zone countries, they say, has worsened the debt crisis in Ireland and elsewhere. Merkel’s name, once widely respected, is now mud. It wasn’t all that long ago that Germany’s chancellor was the star of Europe — a consensus builder who had positioned herself at the vanguard of the effort to save the world from global warming. Indeed, it looked for a time as if Merkel was on the way to becoming a European politician as widely respected as Helmut Kohl was in his time. Die Spiegel

Germany and France declared on Monday that Europe had taken decisive action to save the euro by rescuing Ireland and laying the foundations of a permanent debt resolution system, but investors were not convinced. Under pressure to arrest the threat to the currency before markets opened and prevent contagion engulfing Portugal and Spain, EU finance ministers endorsed an 85 billion-euro ($115 billion) loan package on Sunday to help Dublin cover bad bank debts and bridge a huge budget deficit. They also approved the outlines of a long-term European Stability Mechanism (ESM), based on a Franco-German proposal, that will create a permanent bailout facility and make the private sector gradually share the burden of any future default. Reuters

“Best deal for Ireland” – Cowen
The Irish Government yesterday said the €85bn bailout from the EU and the IMF was the best available deal for Ireland. Speaking at a press conference, Taoiseach Brian Cowen said the external funding allows the country to “move forward with secure funding for our essential public services, for our welfare state, for the most vulnerable members of society that depend on them”. “And it provides Ireland with vital time and space to successfully and conclusively address the unprecedented problems we have been dealing with since this global economic crisis began.”Business & Leadership
International News

Markets and partners relieved at Ireland rescue
(Reuters) – Financial markets rallied slightly and European Union partners voiced relief on Monday after Ireland agreed in principle on a three-year bailout package with the EU and the IMF to salvage its shattered banks. European shares rose 0.7 percent in early trade, the euro climbed and Irish borrowing costs fell in response to an outline rescue deal intended to stop contagion spreading to other fragile euro zone economies. But it was unclear whether the second euro zone bailout in six months, after Greece, would be sufficient to prevent markets targeting fellow straggler Portugal. “It is necessary to help Ireland, otherwise the whole euro zone would be in danger,” Austrian Finance Minister Josef Proell said on Monday after euro zone ministers approved Dublin’s request for aid in a Sunday evening telephone conference. Reuters

EU Agrees on Multi-Billion Rescue Package for Ireland
Ireland has formally asked the European Union for financial assistance, and EU finance ministers have approved the aid. The size of the rescue package is not yet clear, but it could be up to 100 billion euros. Just a few days ago, Ireland was insisting that it would not need a financial rescue package from the European Union. Now Dublin has changed its tune. On Sunday, the Irish government officially requested help from the EU and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Europe’s finance ministers quickly agreed to the aid in a hastily convened telephone conference on Sunday evening. Die Spiegel

Ireland rescue boosts euro
Relief that Ireland and the European Union have agreed a €80bn-€90bn bail-out is providing a positive start to the week for riskier assets. The FTSE All World equity index is up 0.5 per cent, commodity prices are mostly higher and the dollar is weaker as traders make bolder bets. US stock futures are up 0.3 per cent. The euro is rallying on hopes that the deal in Dublin may help reduce the chances of further sovereign debt contagion in the Eurozone. Investors have been fearful that any such contagion will force other nations, perhaps Portugal, to follow Ireland and Greece to seek aid. A leading wholesale company is to create more than 2,100 jobs expanding its high street operations. The AIM Group is sourcing sites for 40 new Iceland supermarkets around the country which will take on 1,400 staff. It is also planning to open 50 more 2 Euro shops and 15 Home Savers stores. Tom Keogh, newly-appointed chief executive at AIM, said the company was committed to promoting Irish suppliers. “Our combined retail offering, of value for money, Iceland foods along with our own brand Home Savers stores we believe will capture the Irish public’s attention and are sure fire winners. We have a well-funded aggressive roll-out programme of retail stores for the next four years.” The Sunday Business Post

Tesco create 310 jobs in store openings
Tesco have opened three stores today creating 310 new jobs. The store openings are in Oranmore, Co Galway (110 employees), Swinford, Co Mayo (90) and Ballybeg, Co Waterford (110). Another 15 jobs will also be created when a Tesco Express Store opens in Newcaste in Galway City next week. Today’s openings are part of Tesco Ireland’s €113m national investment plans for 2010/2011, creating 748 new jobs, announced earlier this year. The Sunday Business Post

O’Keeffe launches €85m fund for new high-tech firms
The Minister for Enterprise Batt O’Keeffe has launched a new €85m venture capital fund which will help high-tech firms in Ireland to get off the ground. Venture capitalists provide risk capital for firms that would otherwise find it hard to raise collateral through traditional sources of finance. The Atlantic Bridge II Fund, which is being supported under Enterprise Ireland’s Seed and Venture Capital Programme 2007-2012, will focus on high-tech firms across Ireland and Europe with strong international growth prospects.
It is expected that the fund will complete a second closing in the coming months, bringing the total fund to €130m. The Sunday Business Post

Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to establish a bankruptcy mechanism for troubled euro-zone countries. But with uncertainty rampant about what such a procedure would look like, Ireland is suddenly faced with horrific borrowing costs. Some suspect Dublin may soon have to ask the EU for help. German Chancellor Angela Merkel doesn’t have many fans in Greece. Many in the Mediterranean country feel that Germay was aggressively accusatory earlier this year when it came to Athens’ severe national debt and budget deficit
problems. Bitterness has only increased as tough austerity measures have taken hold. Die Speigel

Warehouse operatives use wireless, wearable computers with headsets and microphones, through which they can receive voice instructions. The Sunday Business Post

CORPORATION TAX rates are falling around the world, while sales taxes are are increasing, with both trends likely to be maintained, a new report from KPMG has found. The research shows that the Republic’s corporation tax rate of 12.5 per cent is among the lowest in Europe, where the average rate is 21.5 per cent, down from 21.7 per cent a year ago. On the other hand, the average European indirect tax rate is 19.67 per cent, compared to the main Irish VAT rate of 21 per cent. The European average last year was 19.29 per cent. The Minister for Finance, Brian Lenihan, has said tax “will have to play some part” in narrowing the State’s deficit but has committed the Government to retaining the 12.5 per cent corporation rate that has helped secure multinational investment. Business Times

Pharma company in Mayo creates 20 jobs
A Northwest Mayo company is due to begin recruiting “immediately” for 20 new posts in healthcare manufacturing. Bioshell Teo was established in Dublin by John Raftery and Reiner Escweny in 1996, and relocated to its current base in the north Mayo Gaeltacht five years later. It currently employs 25 people, making a wide range of vitamin and mineral supplements for an international market. The company specialises in sports nutrition and ~traditional herbal medicine products, and was granted a manufacturer’s authorisation by the Irish Medicines Board last month. Business Times

M&S set for European comeback
Marks & Spencer is planning a return to Continental Europe and hopes to buy back the stores it controversially sold there nearly a decade ago, it was claimed today. The high street chain is said to have approached a number of European retailers about re-acquiring properties it gave up in 2001 when it closed its entire Continental chain, according to the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. It is understood to have contacted Spanish chain El Corte Ingles about taking back some of the nine shops it sold to them, while it is also said to be looking into re-acquiring some of the 18 French stores that went to retailer Galaries Lafayette, including its former Paris flagship store. The Sunday Business Post

Middle East trade mission ‘will secure jobs’
A week-long trip to the Middle East will help Irish companies land export deals and secure new jobs at home, Trade Minister Batt O’Keeffe said today. Mr. O’Keeffe will lead the visit of 45 homegrown firms and banking representatives to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) today. “We will use this trade mission to help Irish firms to land deals with companies in the Middle East and showcase the high-quality innovative products and services produced by our indigenous enterprises,” he said. Mr O’Keeffe said the trip will also
help develop political, economic and commercial ties between Ireland and Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The Sunday Business Post

Ikea’s Irish and UK sales net €1.4bn
Ikea today said it had become the UK’s leading home furnishings retailer after seeing its sales edge ahead during a difficult year for the sector. The Swedish furniture giant said like-for-like sales in the UK and Ireland, where it has 19 stores, had risen by 1% during the 12 months to the end of August to £1.2bn (€1.4bn). The sluggish growth bucked the trend for the home furnishings sector, with the market shrinking by 7.4% during 2009 as consumers tightened their belts. The Sunday Business Post

US fashion giant eyes up former Habitat store in Dublin
US fashion retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has reignited its interest in Ireland and is in talks to open in the former Habitat store on College Green in Dublin, according to three senior retail sources. The building is owned by Paddy McKillen of Clarendon Properties, the property investor who is taking a legal challenge against Nama and Tony Leonard. Abercrombie has been looking at the Irish market for about three years but decided last year to hold off on plans to expand here. However, sources say detailed talks are now underway in relation to the College Green building, which is close to Trinity College students – the retailer’s ideal target market. Business Tribune

A new kind of snip: a dozen ways to trim our public sector pay bill
The Sunday Tribune has identified up to €4.3bn in radical savings that could be made in the public sector in December’s budget. Although some of the cuts are symbolic and save hardly any money, and some, like a hefty cut in the wages of the judiciary, cannot happen for legal or constitutional reasons, our trawl through public sector budgets has identified several areas where Brian Lenihan could make inroads into our massive budget deficit. Business Tribune

IHG wins tour bus deal for New York
In Hand Guides (IHG),a start-up specialising in low cost embedded audio players, has won a major US contract to supply a tour bus operator in New York. The company secured the deal with Twin America, the operator of City Sights NY and Gray Line New York, with support from Enterprise Ireland’s New York Office. Under the terms of the contract, it will manufacture a branded bespoke audio device for customers of City Sights and Gray Line. The unique credit card-sized audio player will allow customers to tour the city at their own pace, while receiving a one-on-one guided tour. The Sunday Business Post

Zenith opens its fourth office in US
Cork company Zenith Technologies has opened its fourth US office on the west coast of the US, as it gears up to launch a new advanced e-learning solution in the US market. The announcement was made during a visit to the company’s office in Framingham, Massachusetts, last week, by Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe. The visit was organised by Enterprise Ireland, which has actively supported Zenith in its expansions in the US and other international markets. Zenith sells automation, process control and manufacturing execution systems (MES) to the life sciences and other industries. Three of the world’s top ten pharmaceutical
companies are already using its e-learning solution at manufacturing sites in the US and Europe. The Sunday Business Post

Breaking News 1st November 2010:

Ryanair posts profit of €452m
Ryanair today reported a 17 per cent increase in first half net profit to €452 million and upgraded its full-year earnings forecast on the back of strong winter yields. The airline now expects full-year net earnings of between €380 million and €400 million compared with previous estimates of €350 million to €375 million. Revenues at the airline increased by 23 per cent to €2.2 billion as Ryanair carried 40.1 million passengers during the six month period to the end of September, up 10 per cent on the same time last year. However, second-quarter net profit was €313 million, slightly below analysts expectations. “There’s a little bit of disappointment, most people were (expecting) around €350 (million) for second-quarter net profit and they came in a bit behind that,” said Ken Darmondy, analyst with Goodbody Stockbrokers. Irish Times

Taoiseach Brian Cowen has announced a €3.3 million funding boost for the country’s network of county and city enterprise boards (CEBs),which will be paid out before the end of the year, creating more than 450 jobs. The funding stimulus will be channeled through the CEBs with the aim of helping new businesses to get off the ground and support existing ventures. The country’s network of 35 CEBs supports micro-enterprises employing ten or fewer workers in the start-up and expansion phases. They provide business development grants, training and mentoring to small businesses to stimulate local economic activity and entrepreneurship. The Sunday Business Post

Tech firm to create more than 100 jobs in Down
More than 100 jobs will be created after a US technology company said it was establishing a European centre in the North. Software and consulting group First Derivatives already has an office in Newry, Co Down and is expanding its global operations. Its US-based subsidiary Market Research Partners (MRP) will introduce the jobs through a hub in the North. Last week US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hosted the US/Northern Ireland economic conference in Washington DC attended by major corporations from across the US. US economic envoy to the North Declan Kelly said: “Once again, we see a company with US operations looking to Northern Ireland as a strategic location for global expansion because of all the advantages the region offers including location, low operating costs and access to a high-quality workforce.”MRP is a Philadelphia-based company which will have an office located in Newry. The 106 posts will be in place by 2013 and will pay above the private sector average. The Sunday Business Post

Clonmel firm aims to create 50 high-tech jobs
Trustwater, a Clonmel company that has developed a new chemical-free technology for sterilisation and disinfection of water, has plans to create 50 high-tech jobs in the next two years. The new jobs are part of the company’s expansion plans, which include opening two new offices in Singapore and Sydney next year. The breakthrough technology was developed four years ago and, since then, has been installed in Coca-Cola, Fyffes and Shell plants across the world. The generators that provide the technology have been installed in many countries, including China, the Philippines and Malaysia, and will soon be integrated into the northernmost brewery in the world, in the Arctic Circle in Norway. The generator systems are fed with water and salts that undergo a process of chemical reactions to produce solutions that kill germs and bacteria. The system replaces the need for companies to use traditional chemical detergents. Trustwater was founded in 2004 by chief executive Edmond O’Reilly, whose background is in electrical engineering. The Sunday Business Post

Providence offered Rathlin licence
Irish oil and gas exploration and production company Providence has been offered a petroleum exploration licence over Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland. The licence has been offered by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment in response to a recent application made by Providence. The initial licence term is for five years with a decision on a well commitment required within three years. Providence has committed to carry out a number of technical studies of the subsurface geology during the first three years to determine the petroleum potential and inform the decision on the well commitment. Providence will operate the licence with a 100 per cent equity interest. Business Times
G20 to give more power to fast-growing economies
A meeting of the G20 group of the world’s 20 major economies agreed to avoid competitive devaluations to prevent a trade war, but fell short of bringing in targets to reduce trade tensions threatening the balance of the global economy. The broader message from the meeting in Gyeongju in South Korea was a powerful recognition of the shift in economic power to emerging nations away from the western industrial powers. The G20 finance ministers struck a surprise deal giving fast-growing countries more voting power in the executive of the International Monetary Fund. “Our co-operation is essential,” the G20 communiqué said, while the countries also promised to keep their current account balances sustainable. “We are all committed to playing our part in achieving strong, sustainable and balanced growth in a collaborative and co-ordinated way.” Business Times

Flying start for cut-price website
A new website which offers discounts of between 50 and 90 per cent on a variety of goods and services has attracted 125,000 subscribers in its first four months of operation in Ireland. Citydeal.ie has also provided thousands of sales for more than 100 businesses on the site. The site is part of the Groupon chain that operates in Britain, the US and Europe. The service is free and subscriber based, and has had a massive take-up through social networking sites and recommendations, which generate extra account funds for users. The site has a main ‘daily deal’ and a separate ‘side deal’ and businesses queue up to be featured in these slots. Citydeal.ie currently has 100 business affiliates and is targeting a subscriber base of 200,000 users within a year. Nick Harris, the company’s regional manager in Ireland, said the service benefited everyone, with one business a day being exposed to 125,000 subscribers who, in turn, could avail of cut-price products and services. The Sunday Business Post

Fewer companies plan to cut staff, says survey
Confidence among employers in Ireland has risen this year, with fewer companies planning to cut staff and some even considering increasing salaries. A large number of companies are also planning to change at least one compensation benefit plan or policy, such as private medical benefits, defined benefit pension plans and training or education policies. A new survey from Mercer on reward planning for 2011 found that only 27 per cent of firms planned to reduce their headcounts, while 41 per cent said they planned to increase pay next year. Some 22 per cent plan to freeze pay. Multinational firms are more likely to increase pay than Irish companies, the survey said, with only 17 per cent of indigenous companies planning to award employees a pay rise. In comparison, 56 per cent of multinationals said they planned to increase salaries. The average overall increase next year is about 2 per cent. Business Times

Over half CFOs upbeat over future growth
Some 58 per cent of chief financial officers believe their company’s turnover will grow over the next six months, while 61 per cent believe profitability also will improve, according to the latest survey from accountants Deloitte. The third quarter survey found that two out of every five chief financial officers said their company had returned to growth; the remainder expect growth to return next year. While chief financial officers were upbeat on the prospects for the companies, they were more pessimistic on the economy with 33 per cent saying it would not recover until the second half of 2011. A further 22 per cent said there would no recovery until the first half of 2012. Business Times

US firm to invest €1.9m in Dungannon centre
US-owned Terex Corporation has announced plans to invest £1.7million (€1.9million) to establish a new European Global Business Services (GBS) centre in the North, creating 35 high-skilled jobs. The Terex GBS Centre, based in Dungannon, will provide centralised support for finance functions across the firm’s European business operations. It is the second such facility to be built by the corporation, with the aim of linking global functions, including manufacturing, accounting, supply chain and human resources. Terex manufactures equipment for a broad spectrum of sectors, including the construction, infrastructure, recycling, shipping, transportation and maintenance industries. In the North, it has two manufacturing units – in Dungannon and Omagh – which produce mobile crushing and screening equipment, and employ more than 1,000 people. The Sunday Business Post
KidSpotter secures €200,000 in additional funding
HBAN Investor Syndicates has s e cured funding of €200,000 for Dublin-based technology firm, KidSpotter, through a syndicate of individual investors. The funding brings the total investment secured by KidSpotter to date to €400,000. It has also received €200,000 from Enterprise Ireland. Established in 2006 by entrepreneurs Liam Darling and Andrew Dunne, the company develops child safety tracking systems for public facilities with high footfall, including theme parks and shopping malls. Using wireless technologies, the solution allows parents to keep track of their children and locate them quickly if they get lost. The KidSpotter gadget is worn by children and is styled on a wrist-band or watch. It monitors where a child is via GPS or wireless signals, using the internet or a mobile phone. The Sunday Business Post

HeyStaks secures €1m from Ulster Bank fund
HeyStaks Technologies, a startup company based in Dublin, has secured equity funding of €1 million from the Ulster Bank Diageo Venture Fund, managed by NCB Ventures. A spin-out of University College Dublin (UCD), the company will use the seed funding to develop its product offering and establish a formal presence in the US. HeyStaks employs four people in the UCD-based Clarity Centre for Web Sensor Technologies. It aims to increase its staff numbers to 14 within the next year, and to 45 or more by the end of 2013. The company has developed a downloadable browser toolbar and mobile solution that uses social graphs to give users data on the browser searches of their trusted peers. The service works by allowing users to create so-called ‘‘search staks’’. These are folders that contain the searches they have conducted in relation to a certain topic. The Sunday Business Post

Breaking News Tuesday 26th October 2010:

Every aspect of Budget under scrutiny: Ahern
Justice Minister Dermot Ahern today warned every aspect of Government spending was being examined as the Cabinet prepared for a special pre-Budget meeting. Ministers were expected to discuss the scale of the multi-billion euro savings needed at the Farmleigh gathering amid speculation it could be as much as double the initial €3bn estimate. As Fianna Fáil reeled from another disappointing opinion poll, Mr Ahern said it was a matter of putting the country before the party. “Of course it’s going to be tough and difficult for people and for us all,” Mr Ahern said. “But ultimately we have to ensure that whatever we do is fair and is seen to be fair, because sometimes you make decisions in one area that has implications in another area.“Everything is on the table. That’s basically it. There’s nothing ruled out.” The Sunday Business Post
Hume voted Ireland’s Greatest
Former SDLP leader John Hume today said he was humbled and honoured after being voted Ireland’s Greatest in an island-wide poll. The Nobel Peace Laureate faced competition from former President Mary Robinson and Michael Collins to clinch the title. RTÉ broadcast five programmes profiling influential figures in Irish life and the public were urged to vote for who they believed worthy of the Ireland’s Greatest title. Mr Hume said the award was a great honour to his wife Pat and family who helped him work for peace in the North. The Sunday Business Post
